Cycling Coast to Coast

Diana will ride her two wheeled bicycle for 100 days covering 3,500 miles.

This event is a fund raising campaign for Navajo United Methodist Center's New Beginnings Program, which is a transitional shelter for women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence or homelessness. New Beginnings offers a safe environment for women to develop skills, achieving self sufficiency in order to build a new life for themselves and their children bringing stability to the family unit. New Beginnings offers these women encouragement and assistance in achieving their goals. The women who come to New Beginnings may stay up to eighteen months, giving them the time necessary to make the changes to build their new life. Our goal is to raise $350,000 (that is $100 per mile ridden). The capital funds project is two fold: 1) NUMC plans to enlarge the counseling services for both children and their fathers which will help immensely in the strengthening the healing process needed to deal with anger and rebuild hope for each of the family members. 2) NUMC plans to renovate a beautiful 10,000 sq. ft. historic campus dormitory building to provide additional housing for more women and their children.

The epic cycling trip begins on January 28, 2009 driving from Farmington, New Mexico to San Diego, California and ending in St. Augustine, Florida. Diana will embark from Mission Bay, san Diego after dipping both her toe and her rear tire in the Pacific Ocean and when she arrives in St. Augustine, Florida she will again dip her toe and now her front tired in the Atlantic as a symbolic gesture for the cost to coast trip. David Beers, loving husband will be driving the SAG vehicle. David is skilled at reading maps, botany and geography, we might add poetry too. You might say David is the naturalist for our trip.
